Family Harmony 101 – The 5 Structures & Communication

Conflicts frequently happen due to a lack of or breakdown of communication. In order to understand how to communicate better and more effectively with any given member of your family members, you need to take the 5 Structures into account.

A person can belong to any of the 5 Structures – Wealth, Output, Influence, Resource, or Companion.

Check the bottom of the diagram below for the Main Structure.

This person belongs to the Wealth Structure.

The communication style of a Wealth Structure individual is practical, rational, very matter-of-fact, assertive, and not romantic or sentimental at all. They like things to be within their control and they tend to give orders, rather than asking for a favour. Certainty is their main motivation and so communication must be structured in a very plain and rational style.

The Output Structure is the polar opposite of a Wealth Structure when it comes to communication. An Output individual is outgoing, creative, fun, a bit of a dreamer, loves attention, has a high Ego and is very argumentative. They like to be flattered when spoken to and do not like facts and figures.

If you are looking for a mediator or peacemaker, then the Influence Structure person is the one you need. They are friendly, supportive and try to minimize conflict – both in their actions and in their communication style. They are quite sensitive and it is important to them that no party in a conversation or conflict loses face.

The Companion Structure communication style is persuasive, bordering on manipulative. They are very easy going, quite informal, prefer teamwork, but are always very last minute and unprepared. They tend to just “wing it”, especially in a negotiation or a conflict. Yet, they always manage to bring people to their side thanks to their innate ability to flatter others and say whatever the other party wants to hear.

Lastly, if you are dealing with a Resource Structure individual, then you may have to pay great attention to facts, figures, data and trends. They are systematic, orderly, careful – and their communication is no exception. However, they ever quite tell you what they really feel, so there’s a high chance they come with a hidden agenda. Give them assurance when talking to them, listen to them closely and build trust first.
